OAG Accepted as a Member Society of the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association (IOTA)

The Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG) is pleased to announce that it has been officially accepted as a Member Society of the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association (IOTA). This follows a highly positive review and an electronic vote by the IOTA Steering Committee approving OAG’s membership application.

About IOTA

The International Orthopaedic Trauma Association is an academic association of international societies dedicated to advancing orthopaedic and musculoskeletal trauma patient care, education, and research, and supporting the development of trauma organisations globally.

What IOTA Membership Means for OAG and Our Members

OAG’s acceptance into IOTA creates an important pathway for Ghana’s orthopaedic trauma community to participate more actively in global collaboration and professional development.

Key member benefits include:

1. International collaboration and partnerships

IOTA provides a platform for member organisations to enhance collaboration

in research, education, teaching, and program development—creating opportunities for joint initiatives and capacity strengthening.

2. Representation and voice in a global “committee of peers”

IOTA operates as a committee of peers with one vote per member organisation at Steering Committee level. As a Member Society, OAG will be represented within this structure and will participate in IOTA meetings and governance processes.

3. Access to major international academic platforms

IOTA coordinates triennial international meetings and supports scientific exchange across member societies, including symposia linked to major meetings.

4. Research and education opportunities IOTA has supported multinational research projects, published annual supplements, and developed academic networks that broaden opportunities for scholarship and dissemination.

5. Professional development opportunities (including observerships)

IOTA has established observership programs and structured exchanges that support learning across different health systems and trauma settings.

6. Recognition pathway through FIOTA (Fellows of IOTA)

Through IOTA’s Fellows framework, member societies may nominate accomplished members (within stated limits and criteria) for recognition for excellence in orthopaedic trauma education and research.

Next Steps

OAG will provide additional updates as the OTA/IOTA administrative team communicates the formal onboarding process and timelines for participation in upcoming IOTA activities.

We thank IOTA for the warm welcome and congratulate all OAG members on this important achievement.
